摘 要:

This paper examines the effect of online learning time on graduating students’ test score in a senior high school. The online education decision including participation and learning hours is endogenous due to both reverse causality and omitted variables. This paper resorts to the natural experiment of outbreak of COVID-19, which makes every student participate in online education when the spring semester began. In addition, this paper uses a value added model with controlling for the previous scores exactly before the online education, which is a sufficient statistics of students’ unobserved ability and motivation. This should be able to largely alleviate the endogeneity problem if we cannot get rid of it totally. The results show that, online education has positive but limited impacts on test scores on average, especially the effects only last in Math in the natural sciences track; the top-tier students are most positively affected by online education; and the benefits of online education vary in students with different backgrounds. The quantile regression suggests that a 10% increase in online education time raise the math test score by 0.25 for the students between the 0.60th and 0.80th quantiles. Surprisingly, it is found that online learning time has a significant negative effect for some students in some subjects. Finally, the online education neither widen nor narrow the students’ test scores’ inequality.
