摘 要：
The annual survey of industrial firms by China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is the key data source for studies on China's manufacturing sector. The data for years from 1998 to 2007 has been widely used. Data sets exist for 2008 to 2013 but have not been exploited as much partly because a crucial performance variable value-added (and intermediate input) is no longer available. Coinciding with the reduced accessibility to firm-level performance measures is the increasing suspicion of manipulation in official estimates of GDP growth over this period of time. Various auxiliary data and methods have been explored to recover the true performance by direct adjustment of aggregate variables. The results are mixed. We make an attempt to tackle the issue from the micro level. The annual survey conducted by China's State Taxation Administration (STA) provides an alternative source for the information on value-added, with data available for years from 2007 to 2014. Since the STA survey sample is not representative and the precise sampling scheme is unknown, it cannot be used directly to draw inference for China's manufacturing sector. Exploring the fact that a substantial portion of firms from the two sources can be matched and that values of some variables from the two sources are reasonably consistent, we construct weights and simulate from the STA source samples that are comparable to the NBS data. An analysis of the simulated sample suggests the TFP evolution of China’s manufacturing sector after the Great Financial Crisis to be quite different from the earlier years.

王璐航，现任厦门大学王亚南经济研究院和国际经济与贸易系副教授，于2013年获得多伦多大学经济学博士学位。研究领域为国际经济学，中国经济；研究成果发表于Journal of Comparative Economics, American Economic Review, 《经济学季刊》等国内外知名期刊，主持国家自然科学基金青年项目。
