论文提要：In the last three decades, China has experienced fast export growth and dramatic infrastructure improvement. How does infrastructure affect trade? The evidence is still mixed depending on the approach adopted. We investigate this issue by constructing firm- level measure of highway access using GIS information of firms and highways, and adopt the instrumental variable approach to deal with the endogeneity problem. We find that improvement on highway access can significantly promote firm exports after controlling for firm characteristics in addition to unobservable city and industry time-varying factors. More interestingly, low productivity firms benefit more from highway access than high productivity firms. In addition, highways help firms to expand their export and import scopes. We find no evidence that highways promote competition on average. Moreover, the heterogeneous impacts of highways across regions/cities indicate that firms may benefit more from integration of domestic market.
