论文提要:Commercial bankers (executives or directors in banks) often serve as directors or executives in non-financial corporations, thus helping the non-financial firm link to the whole bank industry. A centrality index is built to measure the degree of connectedness of bankers in the banking community. With well-connected bankers sitting on board, non-financial firms could borrow loans with better terms, i.e., a larger loan amount and a lower loan interest rate. By separating our sample into direct and indirect loan cases, we find that the centrality effect is significant in both cases, and particularly, there is a stronger effect on loan size in indirect loans than direct loans. We also find in both direct and indirect loan cases well connected bankers on board attract other banks with high degrees of connectedness in the banking community to the syndicate group, and lower the negotiation costs by shortening the connection distance between the borrower and the lenders. Our result further shows that the job affiliation network is more relevant than conventional social networks of interpersonal links in studying commercial loan outcomes.
